Endodontics
The word “endodontic” means inside the tooth. Endodontic treatments are done on the inside of
the tooth. This includes procedures like root canals, which is a procedures to save a tooth that
may have been injured or infected.
Endodontic treatments can be done in two ways: in situ and ex-situ. Both processes involve
removing the pulp tissue from the center of the tooth, and then disinfecting and filling it with
filling material or sometimes a temporary cement to allow time for natural healing to take place.
The only difference is that in-situs are done on teeth that still have their own roots with their
natural nerve, whereas ex-situs is done when the teeth's root has been damaged or removed.
