Oral Examination

ORAL EXAMINATION

The oral examination is used to examine a patient’s oral cavity and throat.
It is one of the most essential parts of medical examination because it provides vital information on the health status of the mouth, teeth, throat, tongue, and even neck.

Doctors usually conduct the oral exam in the following steps:

  • Visual inspection of tongue and tonsils for redness or ulcers.
  • Palpation for adenoids or lymph nodes at the back of the mouth.
  • Examination of teeth for cavities, periodontal disease, or caries.
  • Observation under the tongue with a light source to check for hard palate opening.
  • Examination over hard palate opening with a mirror and light source to check for tonsil openings.
  • Inspection inside the cheek including the floor of the mouth, base of the tongue, and tonsils.
  • Visual inspection at the back side of the throat by looking down the person's nose.
